Information About Lead

To comply with the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) requirements, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated that all water suppliers complete an inventory of lead service lines.  In 2020, the San Bernardino Municipal Water Department (SBMWD) committed to identifying any water service lines that may contain lead in accordance with the LCRR.  SBMWD also implemented a Lead Water Service Lateral Replacement Program to identify any unknown galvanized service laterals for the presence of lead goosenecks at the corporation stop.  Based on extensive historical records, supplier research, field inspections, and staff expertise, SBMWD has determined that there are no lead service lines in the distribution system. Working with a contractor, SBMWD has also identified all unknown service lines and replaced each service where a lead gooseneck connection was found.

The EPA and State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water, also require water suppliers to identify lead piping on the customer side of the water meter for properties built prior to 1986.  Although SBMWD’s service lines do not contain lead, properties built before 1986 were included in the pipe material survey to ensure the Department’s compliance with this regulation.

At the conclusion of this project, SBMWD verified that the water system contains no lead service lines or galvanized service lines requiring replacement within its distribution system.
